Unable to deny his curiosity—Llyr has to find out how it feels to have sex without a tail—he sets off to seduce the gorgeous pair. But when it becomes apparent his mere presence pushes the lovers apart, he can’t risk destroying the love they have for one another just to appease his own needs.

New to KU - Quads of Alpha S and Tales of Triple M Ranch!

Calling either of these series *NEW* is a bit of a stretch, but they ARE NEW to Kindle Unlimited!

Both of my early series are MM ménage erotica. NOT ROMANCE. So if you prefer to read romances, these series are likely not for you. But if you enjoy a little fun romp in space or reading about hot cowboys on a cattle farm, then by all means, have fun...

The Quads of Alpha S series was one of my first series, written back in 2013. I'm sure they show how green I was as an author back then, but even so, I had a blast writing this Sci-Fi Ménage a Quatre (MMMM) erotic series. I love Sci-Fi and the possibilities it allows...

Crash Landing is the first in the series and the best place to start.

And the Tales from Triple M Ranch arrived in 2015. These guys were so much fun to write -- gay cowboys who loved to spend their free time in one another's beds!

Near the end of this series, though, you will see my pivot toward writing erotic romance versus erotica. While writing hot sex is fun, I needed more, and needed to grow as an author.

I recommend starting with Rode Hard, the first book in the series.

Sunday Spotlight - A.M. Arthur and Heart of Us

Welcome A.M. Arthur back to Sunday Spotlight. She's sharing a bit from her new release -- Heart of Us (Us #4). It sounds amazing!

Charles “Chet” Greenwood has everything he’s ever wanted: a home, a stable business, and strong, loving relationships with his two boyfriends. In the year since he’s been with Cris and Jake, they’ve always agreed on one thing to keep their triad strong: communication is key. Which is why it hurts that lately Jake seems to be hiding something. Before Chet and Cris can find out what, a tragic phone call forces Chet and his nephew Dell to return to their Georgia hometown for a funeral—and to finally confront the bigoted family they left behind.

Jake Bowden never imagined he’d go from an exotic dancer to a professional cook in the space of a year, but here he is. He’s also secretly looking at top culinary schools, but the requirements are way beyond Jake’s abilities. And going to school could take him away from his boyfriends—which might actually be for the best. Chet and Cris have so much history together, are always in sync, and when Jake can’t get time off to support Chet, he feels even more like the odd man out.

Cris Sable knows something is going on with Jake, and he hates leaving Jake behind for two days to attend a funeral, but Chet and Dell need his support—especially with Dell’s own boyfriend unable to make the trip. Cris checks in with Jake constantly while they’re away, and even after their trio returns home, Cris knows something is still wrong. But it gets lost in the aftermath of an unbelievable secret reveal.

While in Georgia, Chet received shocking news about his own past that will change everything about his future, and it rocks their triad to its core. But Cris loves and believes in his men, and he will do everything in his power to keep their three hearts beating as one.

AUTHOR NOTE: This is an m/m/m romance with kinky three-way sex between consenting adults. The “Us” series is best read in numerical order.

Excerpt

Dell let himself out, and Charles locked the door for the evening. The faint hum of voices drew him through the kitchen and into the den, where his boyfriends were sprawled together on the sofa, watching television. Charles had walked quietly enough that they hadn’t heard his approach, and he wasn’t surprised, since both men were likely distracted by Cristian’s hand down Jake’s pants.

Charles took in the beautiful sight. Cristian Sable had height and muscles on the much slimmer Jake Bowden, and Jake was slotted between Cristian’s legs, Cristian’s back propped against the arm of the sofa. Neither man was naked, but Cristian’s hand moved in a steady up-and-down inside of Jake’s pants, and the position was both casual and possessive.

The complicated dance that eventually brought their threesome together had begun almost a year ago, but Charles’s feelings for Cristian had been in place for years. He thanked God each and every day that they’d found each other and were making it work, one day at a time.

In moments like these, when he could observe the pair from a distance, Charles also felt a pang of wistfulness. To be that young again, in his twenties like his boyfriends, still discovering what life was all about. Charles had far too much life experience under his belt. Twenty more years than Cristian and twenty-five more than Jake. The pair would still be young and beautiful when Charles was old and wrinkly. But whatever their reasons, they loved Charles for everything he was, and he loved them in return.

For as long as they wanted him.

“Fuck, you’re such a tease,” Jake said.

“You dared me,” Cristian replied in a tone Charles knew all too well.

“I did not. What I said was ‘how do you not get hard knowing they’re filming porn downstairs?’ You said ‘Years of knowing how hard they’re working to stay up.’”

“And then what did you say?”

Jake grumped.

“Yes, what did you say to Cristian?” Charles asked.

The pair startled, but Cristian never stopped stroking Jake. Jake rolled his eyes. “Okay, maybe I kind of dared him when I asked how long he thought he could keep me hard without letting me come.”

“Oh? And how long has it been?”

Cristian beamed at him. “Two hours. He’s starting to get a little feisty about it, and my hand is cramping.”

“Well then, how about I take over for a while?”

Jake squawked, but didn’t protest. Charles and Cristian swapped places, and Charles eagerly accepted Jake’s warm, lean body against his. Slid his hand under Jake’s underwear to clasp his cock. Jake humped back against Charles’s crotch, teasing him until Charles had a semi going. He rarely got hard during shoots, because he’d trained his body to know what was work and what was play, and his body very much loved how Jake played.

Charles stroked Jake’s erection in a loose, lazy grip. “So, Cristian, what are we watching while we torture Jake?”

“Well, we were watching an action movie that ended a little while ago,” Cristian replied as he sat on the other end of the couch. Put Jake’s feet in his lap to massage. “Maybe we should put some porn on to mess with his head.”

“You guys suck,” Jake said with a petulant whine.

“Yes, we do.” Cristian leered. “And very well, I might add.”

“Just think of your future orgasm,” Charles added. “Delayed gratification isn’t something we’ve done much, but it can be amazing. Especially for young brats who like to tease their elders.”

Jake pouted, so Charles pressed his thumbnail into Jake’s slit, earning a sharp hiss. Jake grabbed the knees of Charles’s slacks and ground his ass into Charles’s erection. “I don’t want delayed gratification, I want to come.”

“When we say so.”

“Ugh.” For all Jake’s protests, he didn’t get up, or take matters into his own hands. He gave in to whatever game Charles and Cristian decided to play, which meant his protests were part of the game. He was definitely enjoying himself.

In the nine-ish months since they’d declared themselves a throuple, Charles was absolutely learning to read his men.

NEW RELEASE: Bitten by Midnight (Midnight Mississippi, Book 4) is here!

The neverending book is FINALLY here! The planned 35,000K story grew to over 66,000 ~ And release had to be pushed back not once, but twice...

Bitten by Midnight
Midnight Mississippi, 4

Kane doesn’t much like the idea of becoming a member of the King’s Guard through default. He’s much more interested in remaining on the taskforce he’s already on—an elite group of Midnight police who hunt the things that nearly killed him twenty years before.

The things that did kill his entire family. And left him as a Halfling vampire.

He’s vowed to destroy every vampire in Midnight, eager for vengeance.

During one of the taskforce's raids—the one that garnered him his berth as a guardsman—he comes across a man bitten all to hell by the vamps. Kane instantly recognized him as a mate. The king’s uncle, Ralnur, is close to death when Kane carries him from the nest, terrifying an already shaken Halfling.

Seeing a mate as a weakness, Kane refuses to make the claim—but he will save the man’s life the only way he knows how. By making Ralnur the very thing he hunts.

As he runs from the attraction he feels, fate steps in and hurtles him into a meeting with his second mate. He’s assigned to protect the researcher tasked with finding out who turned the king’s uncle into a vampire.Kane refuses to endanger Ralnur and Caelian by bringing them into his life and the battle he wages against the undead.

No matter how much the instinct demands he mark them with his bite.

Caelian sat across from him. “I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours.”
Kane smiled.
“Both my parents were mixed race. My mother was Nymph, Human, and Fae. My father was Elvish, Human, and Witch. I’m basically a mutt, but mostly Human. Impure blooded and not accepted by any of them.”
Kane winced. He understood being ostracized. Many residents of Midnight didn’t care for vamps. And the combos explained a lot. Caelian was much too tall to be all Elf and too good looking not to have a little Fae blood. Witch made sense with those wards. The nymph part was interesting. Could be why the guy was showing off his body and throwing come hither looks over the table as he made his plate.
Come hither looks were going to become harder and harder to ignore as the night progressed.
“So, how do you do it?”
“Do what?” Kane asked as he made his plate.
“Not drink blood.”
Kane sensed the amulet sitting on his chest. “Ancient secret.”
“Oh come on!” Caelian lowered his plate to the table. “I said I’d share if you did.”
“I didn’t agree to those terms,” Kane said before lifting a bit of the stew to his lips. “Oh, damn. That isgood.”
Caelian watched him for a moment. “I didn’t know Halflings ate real food.”
“We don’t eat. Much.” Kane eyed him. “Just enough to get by.”
Caelian didn’t respond. Nor did he say much as they ate. Kane packed it in, his hunger monumental. He could feel the elfling’s stare on him as he ate. Once they were done and had cleaned up the mess, Kane noted it was nearly eleven.
“What time do you usually get up and head over to the archive?” Kane asked.
“About seven,” Caelian said. “The walk’s not far from here.”
“I suppose you should get some rest then,” Kane said, looking around. “I can head outside and guard the door while you sleep.”
He rose from the table and headed toward the door.
“Don’t go,” Caelian said, rising.
As Kane turned around, he watched the towel drift to the floor. His stare moved down, and he got the first look at his elf.
Allof his elf.
Caelian was… gorgeous. And Kane wanted to lick every square inch of the man. More than once. Caelian’s hard cock jutted before him, leaking a tiny bit of jizz.
“Stay,” Caelian murmured. “I’d rather notbe alone.”
Kane felt his cock screaming its approval of that idea. He took a step closer, need propelling him forward.
Mine.
Kane lifted his stare away. I can’t touch him.
I’m here to guard him. Protect him. I can’t do that in his bed.
He dragged his gaze away, willing himself enough strength to say no. “I’ll be just outside.”
Kane could see the disappointment in Caelian’s golden gaze.
Don’t worry, Caelian. I’m just as disappointed.
He moved outside the doors, the soft click of the knob a welcome sound. His body raged under that golden armor of his, his heart slamming against his ribcage.
A heartbeat.
Hunger.
Lust.
What the hell is happening to me?

Don't forget Bitten by Midnight is technically the FIFTH book in the Midnight series... Theirs by Midnight 3.5 continues Adriel, Eilam, and Noah's story after Dead by Midnight

Chapter One

Before the Epilogue

Carson Davies’ fingers flew over the keyboard as he tried to wrap up work for the day. Intent on the screen, he let out a scream as he felt a pair of hands grab him from behind. Flipping his head to the side, he saw a smiling Royce behind him and breathed out a relieved sigh.

“Jumpy much?”

“You’re going to give me a heart attack if you sneak up on me like that,” Carson said.

“I can give you mouth to mouth, if you need it,” Royce added with a grin.

“Oh yeah?” Carson asked, his heart still thundering in his chest.

As Royce wrapped his big, strong arms about Carson and lowered his head, that thundering shifted from fear to anticipation. The scent of his big bear shifter filled his nose—the musky scent of man and that woodsy aroma of bear—and it got his blood pressure rising.

When Royce’s lips hit his, the shifter feasted on him. A hunger Carson hadn’t felt just moments before raced through his veins—but that wasn’t news. They barely had to touch him to get his heart pounding and need making it impossible to think straight. Royce drew away after a moment, leaving him wanting more.

“I brought dinner,” Royce murmured huskily. “You should come eat. Jared’s getting the table set.”

Carson glanced at the time at the corner of his screen. “You two are home early.”

“We’re celebrating,” Royce announced.

One of Carson’s brows rose. “And just what are we celebrating?”

“You arrived at the inn exactly three months ago.”

Carson chuckled. “Really? We’re doing quarterly anniversaries?”

Royce smiled. “Well, to be honest, I was planning on grabbing dinner from the restaurant on my way home anyway. We’ve all been busy.”

“So why did we need a reason for take out tonight versus every other night we’ve done it?” Carson asked with a grin. He knew the three-month thing was a bit cheesy, but there was something inherently adorable that Royce had remembered and wanted the mark the date.

“I ran across an invoice that somehow got missed in my data entry—and in doing my research, I stumbled across your check-in date. I figured fate was trying to tell me to appreciate the blessings I have and come home early to my mate and brother bear to celebrate.”

“Your bear godssent you a message, hmm?”

Something like that,” Royce murmured before swooping in for another kiss.

Carson moaned against the bear’s lips, hungry for more than a few enticing kisses. And it definitely wasn’t for food. He turned back to his computer, even as his body screamed in protest. “Let me wrap up a couple of emails and I’ll be out for dinner shortly.”

Royce nuzzled against his ear as Carson forced his fingers moved back to the keyboard, making it hard to focus on work.

The bear’s tongue laid a hot trail down his neck, making Carson’s head fall back some. He bit back a moan, the need for Royce growing with every second. Royce let out a low growl, the rippling sound washing over Carson and making his body ache.

His fingers typed along, the speed varying as he paid more attention to the hot kisses on his neck and ear—but after he had to fix a typo three times before truly correcting it, he knew he had to put his foot down.

“The longer you do that, the longer it’ll take me to finish.”

Royce chuckled, sending warm breath over his ear. Carson sighed inwardly, half of him wanting to say forget it and let Royce tempt him away from his desk. But he had a potential new client and needed to wrap up at leastthat one email. He had a big Skype meeting coming up and needed to share some information with the client beforehand.

“Okay, okay.”

The big bear shifter exited the office, Carson’s stare on his perfect, firm ass the entire time. He let out a sigh once his mate was gone and quickly finished off the email he’d been typing—as well as answered a couple more brief ones. Once he was done for the day, he climbed from his seat and wandered out to the living room.

His other mate, Jared, was putting the final touches on the dining room table. Crystal. Candles. The whole shebang. A smile forced its way on his face.

Carson stopped next to Jared, letting out a low whistle. “Going all out, hmm?”

Jared rose to his full height from where he’d been bent over the dining table, a broad grin on his face. He cocked his head to the side. “You’re not worth going all out?”

Carson could only smile harder, no matter how much he tried to hide it. The last couple of weeks, his bears had gone out of their way to be…

He paused, trying to consider the wording. Romantic?

What had started as a lust-filled pairing was evolving into something much more—something he was ill-equipped to handle. Lust, he knew. Love, he had less experience with.

Love.

Was that what this thing between them was becoming?

Carson had quickly accepted the almost instantaneous animal bond he had with the pair. Chemistry had drawn them together and he’d gone willingly, the carnality leading him down their dark road. But if the lust ever faded…

What did they have left?

A tiny bit of panic hit him square in the chest.

Carson was a relationship failure. He’d had a string of bad luck over the years and didn’t know if he knew how to be a good boyfriend.

Husband?

Whatever the hell a mate was equivalent to in their world. He was almost afraid to ask; fearful he wouldn’t measure up to their expectations.

Jared frowned, concern on his face. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” Carson said, emotion twisting in his chest. He looked up into those glowing eyes of Jared’s knowing how much they cared.

Knowing how much he cared for them.

And how scared he was it would all go to hell eventually.

Jared reached out and brushed a few strands from Carson’s face before lowering his head to steal a kiss. It was softer than the claiming kiss that he’d just shared with Royce, but no less demanding in its own right.

Carson lost himself in that kiss, trying to quell the worry building within. For now, all was well.

When Jared pulled away, Carson looked up into his mate’s glowing eyes. Bear shifter eyes glowed when they felt strong emotions. Sometimes he thanked the heavens his didn’t do the same. Like now. He felt vulnerable enough without them knowing what was churning inside his mind.

And in his heart.

Jared stared down at him, an odd expression on his face. “You can talk to us, you know? If something is bothering you—you don’t have to face it alone.”

Carson patted Jared on the arm, shoving the worry away. “I know. I’m good. Real good.” Why he was tempting something bad, he wasn’t sure. Just thinking something like that was opening the door for failure.

This won’t fail.

His smiled faded some, the worry creeping back in.

Pre-order: Theirs by Bond (Bear Mountain, 1.5)

(Pre-order links at bottom of page)

Starting back in March, I started re-reading the Bear Mountain books one by one, one per week. As I shared in the "Hating on Tyler McCreary" post, I've been meeting with readers on Tuesday nights in my Facebook group to share insights, trash talk mistakes, answer questions, and basically just have a fun hour of talking shit...

We just finished reading book 15 this past Tuesday... so we're already past the 3/4 mark. (We've decided to do Project Zed books, too, as we've had so much fun. We might do other books after that.)

Along the way, I've noted any typos and have been slowly working to clean up and fix them before re-releasing.

I've also had moments where I could kick myself in the ass... "why didn't I..." do this or that. Or characters have whispered in my ear as I re-read, telling me a little more about themselves, more than they told me the first time around.

Honestly, I've also had a few awesome, out of left field questions from points of view that aren't mine. My readers are amazing and point out things I couldn't see from my own point of view.

A couple of ladies in particular ask me tough questions and keep me on my toes! They know who they are.

So I had all these new scenes and ideas swirling in my mind as I re-read...

And then I realized... I can do something about this.

I can write them.

Bound by Two Bears wasn't supposed to be a 20+ book series with two spin-offs. I had been working on a book that just wasn't coming together. I was frustrated. I decided to take a break from that story and write something else. Just as I was toying with the idea of writing some bear shifters, a reader asked me why I hadn't wrote any menage stories in a while—she wanted some moresomes, dammit!

BOOM. Bound to Two Bears came into my mind.

It was supposed to be a quick, insta-love story—heavy on the sex. I wanted something fun and fluffy to get my mind off of the book that was driving me nuts.

And then Bear Mountain became what it did, and I've regretted not giving that story a bit more world building. It also makes me sad many people didn't like Royce...

I have the power to fix that. It just took me a while to realize I had that power.

So Theirs by Bond was born.

In the epilogue to Bound to Two Bears, we see Carson big and preggers, nearly ready to pop.

What happened between the end of the last chapter and the epilogue?

Theirs by Bond will give you a little insight into this time period... when things were still new and Carson, Jared, and Royce were still figuring things out and getting comfortable.

And a little uncomfortable... as they were trying to turn that lust into love.

New Release: CYBORG: A Bear Mountain Story (Project Zed, 7) by Kelex

The final PROJECT ZED book is here!

Pfc. Ford Lennox is fairly certain he’s once again in the wrong place at the wrong time. He hadn’t been a true part of the terror that was Project Zed, but suffered because of it, just the same. Ford was forced to remain in Bear Mountain to hide their location, but once Zed attacks, he knows he’s no longer bound to stay. Too bad a chance meeting with a wolf shifter in a wheelchair has him lingering and questioning if he should leave.

Angry at the world, Hemming takes out his frustrations on those closest to him—and ignores the draw to Lennox… at first. When the human is attacked by another shifter, the protective instinct within the wolf goes into overdrive and he’ll do just about anything to keep Ford safe.

But he’s tasked with hacking into the cyborg Zed left behind during the last attack. Deacon wants the shifter within saved, but Hemming’s not so sure that’s possible. Can he get through the bits and bytes and find the man inside—especially when his focus is torn between the cyborg and the human he’s vowed to protect?

As the war comes to a close, everything is on the line.

“So what you feel for me is instinct. An animal lust you can’t ignore?”
Hemming lifted his stare, a glow to his eyes. “In all honesty, yes. That’s what it is.”
“I’m no animal… so what is it I feel for you?”
Hemming lowered the tech in his hands down to the table and then pinned Ford with a heated stare. Ford could feel it all the way down to his toes.
“I don’t know… what do you feel for me?” Hemming asked, his voice more growl than words.
The throbbing need he felt intensified. “A connection… one that… tightens around me each time we see one another. I can barely think… barely breathe… my heart goes crazy in my chest. All I can think about is… being with you… touching you… kissing you.”
“Do you want to kiss me right now?”
Ford nodded.
“Then perhaps you should come here and kiss me,” Hemming said.
Rising on shaking legs, Ford did just that. He took the few steps and nearly fell into Hemming’s lap. Ford captured the shifter’s face in his hands and pressed his mouth to the man’s lips. That one touch electrified him, zipping through his body like a jolt. His hands slid to the back of Hemming’s head. He felt as if he needed to hold on tight and never let go.
Hemming’s scruff scratched his face as they fed from each other. Intoxicated by the rough lash of the wolf’s tongue, he moaned, hungry for Hemming to take more from him. As if he understood Ford’s need, the shifter slid a hand through his hair and captured the back of his head, a touch roughly.
Another groan came from his lips as his tongue warred with Hemming’s. He bit the wolf’s lower lip and sucked it between his own before releasing it to lick and nibble some more. Breathless with anticipation, he moved to straddle his lover’s lap.

Chapter One

Irishi, an Earth-like planet in decline

Berkeley “Berke” Rylan climbed through one of the building’s many broken windows, avoiding the jagged glass that remained along the edge. As soon as he stood inside, he dusted his hands off on his pants and gazed around the deteriorating structure, listening for anything moving within. He could only hear the steady beating of his own heart and the shallow breaths he took.
It was cooler inside, yet the heat was still near suffocating. Sweat dripped along his back and temple. He lifted the small canteen at his waist and drained the last few drops of it before shoving it back onto his belt.
Pale sunlight shone in through holes in the ceiling and the holes where windows had once hung. What little bit of glass was left was either shattered by the earthquakes, damaged by roving gangs, or clouded over by lingering dust from the sandstorms that came often came through. At some point—before the oceans and rivers had dried up—trees and foliage had made their claim. Dried dead branches wove here and there, a remnant of another time. From past experience, he knew one touch would make them deteriorate and blow away in the wind.
Once he was fairly certain no one else was there, he relaxed some. The light streaming in deepened the shadows, making it harder to see into the corners of the rooms. Berke took a few tentative steps, scanning the interior as best he could. His footfalls over the layer of fine debris echoed around the room.
As with the last three buildings he’d come into, there looked to be little left behind. Over the last decade, the building had likely been looted and combed over in the search for any resources—over and over again.
The place also smelled of urine and feces, so there was a chance someone, or something, was holing up in there. He made quick work of looking for items of value. Room by room he moved, hopeful there was something left behind that others hadn’t taken.
By the time he reached the last door, he came up short.
His stomach growled, hunger overtaking him. Berke knew there was a small piece of jerky left in his pack, but he was saving that for his dinner. After that, there was nothing else.
Unless he found something to trade.
Berke eyed the stairwell, knowing the building was unstable. A trip up could be catastrophic, so he rarely took the chance. His stomach clenched again, making him reconsider…
Before he could take one step, the ground began to tremble. Instead of heading up, he raced to the window he’d come in through. As he jumped out, he felt the slash of pain. Hitting the ground and rolling, a cry tore from his lips upon impact.
Berke moved his hand down to his ankle and brought back fingers coated in blood.
Fuck.
Before he could investigate any further, the building began to sway. Berke leapt to his feet and scrambled as quickly as he could with a wounded leg. A wall of concrete and metal fell in his direction. His heart thundered in his chest as he scrambled out of the way.
The rubble missed him by inches.
He fell back to his ass, breathing hard, and thankful he’d made it out alive.
After a moment, Berke sat up. Looking to his ankle and seeing his pants soaked with blood, he realized the question now was how long he’d remain alive. Even if he could make it back to the outpost, he could get an infection and it would only be a matter of weeks before he’d be dead.
Berke dug through his pack and found his spare canteen of water. There was little left. Either he washed his wound to protect against infection or he saved it so he didn’t die of dehydration.
He’d seen that death before and it wasn’t pretty.
Berke stared at the canteen a moment, trying to decide what to do.
“Maybe we can be of assistance?”
Berke’s head whipped up, and he quickly scrambled to his feet. Pain made him want to hiss… but he tried to hide the ache from the stranger. He reached for his knife and held it in his hand, ready for a fight.
Two huge men stood near, one much closer than the other.
How did they sneak up on me? Because I was more concerned with another lethal threat.
The closer of the two stood with his hands empty, palms up. “We mean you no harm.”
Berke looked between them. Both kept their hands up and where he could see them, but as hulking as they were it was hard to see them as anything but a threat. Returning his gaze to the first man. “What do you want?”
The stranger frowned. “I see you’re hurt. We can help.”
That frown… the look of concern… Berke narrowed his gaze. There was something… familiar about the man. He looked to the second. Yes, there was something familiar about them both. Searching his memory, he couldn’t recall where he’d seen them before.
Their size alone should’ve made them stand out in his memory. Berke wasn’t small. He stood eighteen hands tall… these men were easily twenty hands.
“I don’t need your help,” Berke said, his jaw clenched against the pain.
“If you don’t treat that cut, you could end up with a nasty infection.”
Berke eyed the strangers, his gaze moving between them. After it landed back on the closer man, he asked, “I don’t have anything of value for you to steal.”
“There’s nothing I want,” the man said with a smile. “Other than to help you… if you’ll let me.”
Give yourself to us.
Berke shook his head. Where had that thought come from? He shook his head, pushing the wayward thought from his mind. “Help? Not likely.”
“I know you’re not accustomed to the kindness of strangers… but we mean you no harm. There’s nothing you have we wish to steal. Your things… nor your life.”
Berke met the man’s stare… and he sucked in a gasp. There was something about him… something that made Berke want to give in.
Yet, that only made him warier.
“You’ll die without our help,” the man murmured, cocking his head to the side. “So, what do you have to lose?”
Berke eyed them both… they were clean. Well dressed. Well fed. They didn’t belong there.
“You have medicine?” he asked.
“A salve. Of my own creation,” the man said. “Not much medicine around anymore.” He pulled a pack from over his shoulder.
Berke jumped, lifting the knife.
“Relax… I’m just going to get the salve to show you.”
Berke’s heart raced, adrenaline shooting through his veins. He tightened his grip on the knife, hoping like hell he wouldn’t have to use it.
He would, if forced to.
There was already enough death and decay around. Berke never chose to add to it, unless there was no other choice.
Kill or be killed.
His gaze moved between them, his body tense and ready to jump.
The stranger lifted a tin from his pack and opened it. He showed the contents to Berke.
“And it can stop an infection?”
“It’s helped others before,” the stranger answered.
“You a doctor?”
The stranger smiled. “I’m a healer, of sorts.” The man looked down and knelt suddenly.
Berke’s gaze followed the man down.
His canteen.
Fuck! He didn’t have much water left as it was. If they took his canteen, he’d likely die of dehydration before he made it back to the outpost.
If I make it back to the outpost. “Giv—”
“Looks like you dropped this,” the stranger interrupted, handing over Berke’s canteen.
Berke stared at it a moment, ashamed that he’d assumed the worst. It could still be a trick. Luring me closer so they can kill me.
Yet his gut told him that wouldn’t happen.
The stranger smiled slightly, and something unfurled in his mind. He still couldn’t quite remember why he knew this man…
“We mean you no harm,” the stranger repeated. “You’ll die without water. Please… take it.”
Berke met the man’s stare—his eyes an odd golden color, much like the hair on his hair and face. Inside those eyes, he saw no guile. No evil intent. A sense of comfort came over him, and Berke didn’t understand it. His defenses felt as if they were crumbling around him and he had no control over it.
He’s so beautiful.
Berke inwardly gasped. He’d never considered another man as handsome, but there was no denying it. This male’s masculine beauty was something to be admired. Praying he wasn’t making a mistake, he reached out and took the canteen.
The stranger backed away as Berke tossed the canteen into his pack.
“You’re losing a lot of blood. We need to get it stopped and cleaned,” the stranger added.
Berke narrowed his stare. He knew he needed help, but strangers were dangerous. He’d heard the tales of those who hunted other people as food. He didn’t like his odds. Two against one. They could easily overtake him, especially considering his current situation.
Could they be cannibals?
The men did look awfully well fed. Berke was one of the best earners at the outpost and could still see some of his own ribs sticking out. I don’t have enough meat on my bones to make for food. They’d starve if they ate me.
“Where are you from?” Berke asked, looking between them. “There’s nothing around here for miles.”
The closer man smiled. “We have plenty of time to talk… while we work on that foot.”
“Ankle,” Berke corrected, swaying slightly. “It’s not as bad as it looks.”
The guy cocked his head. “It looks pretty bad.”
Berke glanced down, saw the blood, and realized it was much worse than he had realized. Another wave of wooziness hit him. He lifted his stare, panic hitting him.
Calm down. Slow the heart. Slow the pumping…
He staggered a bit, the world shifting around him. His legs felt unsteady below him. The knife dropped from his hand.
The stranger raced closer, grabbing Berke as he fell.
“I’ve got you,” the man murmured as the world went sideways.
The other man moved in close, just behind them. Berke met the man’s gaze and felt a fluttering in his chest.
Who are they?
“Will he survive?” the second man asked.
“We got here just in time.”
“In time… for what?” Berke whispered.
The healer smiled at him. He lifted a hand to cup Berke’s cheek. “Sleep.”
He opened his mouth to argue, but lost the ability. Darkness took him.
