Recommended Reading Order for the Bear Mountain, Project Zed, and Midnight, Mississippi Books

Hi there! As many of you know, I began both Bear Mountain spinoff series midway through writing the twenty-three books* of Bear Mountain.

Now that all three series are in Kindle Unlimited, there's been renewed interest in these series.

So here's a quick guide to which order I recommend them to be read in...

* * *

Bear Mountain Books 1-18

Beast, Project Zed, 1

Bear Mountain Books 19-20

Bearly Midnight, Midnight Mississippi, 1

Project Zed and Midnight books 1-4** aren’t linked... so either series can be read 1st/2nd

Bear Mountain Books 21-22 should be read AFTER the end of Project Zed

* * *

*Twenty-three books? Why do I only see twenty-two books for Bear Mountain?? Because Amazon doesn't like middle books and won't add them to series pages. Theirs by Bond is Bear Mountain Book 1.5 and it revisits Royce, Jared, and Carson from book one and expands on their story. And yes -- it's available in KU, too.

**The Midnight books also have one of those pesky 'in the middle books' that Amazon likes to hide. Theirs by Midnight is book 3.5. It is also in KU.

ALSO!!

The Midnight, Mississippi series is NOT complete. Book 5 has been on my to-write list for far too long. I need to get my butt in gear and write it. The Omegaverse books stole my muse's attention... especially since there's at least 2-3 more books to write in that series. When they come, I'm going to recommend they be read after Bear Mountain Books 21 and 22, just in case.

December 2018 Writing Update

A writing update! I haven't done one of these in forever...

So... you want to know what's going on?

After October's scary month-long writer's block, we finally got to A Monster for Two Bears (Bear Mountain, 21) in November. And yes, it was my only release, but it was a HUGE book and I can only push the muse by so much. (I might be biased, but it was also a damned good book, too)

I'm still feeling a bit out of sorts this month, I will admit. I'm still not at 100%. Writing takes a lot out of a person and I've been publishing books left and right for nearly six years. I'm mentally and emotionally exhausted...

Anywho... what's coming?

HIS SURROGATE OMEGA is coming.

This is planned for release later in December (I hope -- if I can just get it all done! My editor is waiting semi-patiently and it's almost there...)

This will be the first book in my new non-shifter Omegaverse series.

I started this book months ago and had to sideline it when I realized I had the wrong MCs and needed to switch gears.

Don't worry, the other MCs I had been focusing on will be coming in book 2. It just wasn't time yet for their story.

Side note -- is that cover fucking gorgeous or what? Thanks to the wonderful Wander Aguiar, of course. His pictures are AMAZEBALLS.

This title will likely be the only one in December -- and just might end up being the longest book I've ever written.

I'd like to take off a little time to spend with family later in the month so I can recharge and get ready for a very busy 2019.

What? That's it? An update with one book?

Not exactly...

I'll give you a little peek into what's on deck so far in 2019

Bear Mountain Book 22 (title TBD)
This will be LJ and Chase's story hinted at the end of book 21

Fantasy Isle Series - 3 books written as Xander Kane
These will be reminiscent of the earlier erotica titles I used to write. The first will hopefully come in January/February

Midnight Mississippi Book 5 (title TBD)
No, I haven't forgotten about Midnight! I will be completing this series in 2019, hopefully -- as long as I can stay on track. I'm estimating 3-4 more books and it will come to an end.

Omegaverse Book 2

Dragons? IDK... maybe. A little bird has been chirping in my ear, begging for the final Earth Dragon book and more. I'm mulling, but no promises.

NEW RELEASE: Bitten by Midnight (Midnight Mississippi, Book 4) is here!

The neverending book is FINALLY here! The planned 35,000K story grew to over 66,000 ~ And release had to be pushed back not once, but twice...

Bitten by Midnight
Midnight Mississippi, 4

Kane doesn’t much like the idea of becoming a member of the King’s Guard through default. He’s much more interested in remaining on the taskforce he’s already on—an elite group of Midnight police who hunt the things that nearly killed him twenty years before.

The things that did kill his entire family. And left him as a Halfling vampire.

He’s vowed to destroy every vampire in Midnight, eager for vengeance.

During one of the taskforce's raids—the one that garnered him his berth as a guardsman—he comes across a man bitten all to hell by the vamps. Kane instantly recognized him as a mate. The king’s uncle, Ralnur, is close to death when Kane carries him from the nest, terrifying an already shaken Halfling.

Seeing a mate as a weakness, Kane refuses to make the claim—but he will save the man’s life the only way he knows how. By making Ralnur the very thing he hunts.

As he runs from the attraction he feels, fate steps in and hurtles him into a meeting with his second mate. He’s assigned to protect the researcher tasked with finding out who turned the king’s uncle into a vampire.Kane refuses to endanger Ralnur and Caelian by bringing them into his life and the battle he wages against the undead.

No matter how much the instinct demands he mark them with his bite.

Caelian sat across from him. “I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours.”
Kane smiled.
“Both my parents were mixed race. My mother was Nymph, Human, and Fae. My father was Elvish, Human, and Witch. I’m basically a mutt, but mostly Human. Impure blooded and not accepted by any of them.”
Kane winced. He understood being ostracized. Many residents of Midnight didn’t care for vamps. And the combos explained a lot. Caelian was much too tall to be all Elf and too good looking not to have a little Fae blood. Witch made sense with those wards. The nymph part was interesting. Could be why the guy was showing off his body and throwing come hither looks over the table as he made his plate.
Come hither looks were going to become harder and harder to ignore as the night progressed.
“So, how do you do it?”
“Do what?” Kane asked as he made his plate.
“Not drink blood.”
Kane sensed the amulet sitting on his chest. “Ancient secret.”
“Oh come on!” Caelian lowered his plate to the table. “I said I’d share if you did.”
“I didn’t agree to those terms,” Kane said before lifting a bit of the stew to his lips. “Oh, damn. That isgood.”
Caelian watched him for a moment. “I didn’t know Halflings ate real food.”
“We don’t eat. Much.” Kane eyed him. “Just enough to get by.”
Caelian didn’t respond. Nor did he say much as they ate. Kane packed it in, his hunger monumental. He could feel the elfling’s stare on him as he ate. Once they were done and had cleaned up the mess, Kane noted it was nearly eleven.
“What time do you usually get up and head over to the archive?” Kane asked.
“About seven,” Caelian said. “The walk’s not far from here.”
“I suppose you should get some rest then,” Kane said, looking around. “I can head outside and guard the door while you sleep.”
He rose from the table and headed toward the door.
“Don’t go,” Caelian said, rising.
As Kane turned around, he watched the towel drift to the floor. His stare moved down, and he got the first look at his elf.
Allof his elf.
Caelian was… gorgeous. And Kane wanted to lick every square inch of the man. More than once. Caelian’s hard cock jutted before him, leaking a tiny bit of jizz.
“Stay,” Caelian murmured. “I’d rather notbe alone.”
Kane felt his cock screaming its approval of that idea. He took a step closer, need propelling him forward.
Mine.
Kane lifted his stare away. I can’t touch him.
I’m here to guard him. Protect him. I can’t do that in his bed.
He dragged his gaze away, willing himself enough strength to say no. “I’ll be just outside.”
Kane could see the disappointment in Caelian’s golden gaze.
Don’t worry, Caelian. I’m just as disappointed.
He moved outside the doors, the soft click of the knob a welcome sound. His body raged under that golden armor of his, his heart slamming against his ribcage.
A heartbeat.
Hunger.
Lust.
What the hell is happening to me?

Don't forget Bitten by Midnight is technically the FIFTH book in the Midnight series... Theirs by Midnight 3.5 continues Adriel, Eilam, and Noah's story after Dead by Midnight

NEW RELEASE: Theirs by Midnight (Midnight, Mississippi, 3.5) by Kelex

After I'd published Dead by Midnight, King Adriel, Noah, and Eilam whispered a scene into my mind -- and I knew that I couldn't move forward with Midnight Book 4 until I'd revisited the triad from Book 3 and finished their story.

Theirs by Midnight
Midnight Mississippi, Book 3.5

Now king’s consorts, Eilam and Noah struggle to adjust to life in the castle. Things aren’t helped with King Adriel’s desire to hold a ball in their honor—in a little over a week’s time. A thousand guests is a logistical nightmare in and of itself, especially since the guests of honor are in charge of Midnight’s security. Both men try to discourage Adriel from holding the event, but the king is accustomed to having his every whim granted and won’t be dissuaded.

Adriel wants to show the whole of Midnight he’s fully accepted his mates. After the months of pushing them away, he feels the need to shout his affection from the mountaintops. Perhaps it’s a bit of guilt driving him to make the grand gesture, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, is it? Eilam and Noah just need to warm to the idea.

To get his way, Adriel promises Eilam and Noah twenty-four hours alone with him in his private realm immediately after the ball—where he won’t be allowed to use his magic during the hours between arriving and departing. He’s not quite sure what Eilam and Noah have planned, but whatever it may be, it’s already making him tremble with delight.

Chapter One
Castle Midnight

Noah lifted his lids, confused for a moment where he was. Silk sheets were smooth under his body. Heavy brocade curtains covered windows that rose to what had to be ten-foot ceilings. Light peeked through the slits between, hinting that morning was upon them. A warm body lay against him, and it took a moment to remember that it wasn't Eilam's. He rolled over and glanced down at his mate. King Adriel seemed to instinctively cuddle into his arms. A smile spread across his lips. Glancing over at Eilam sleeping on Adriel's other side, it all came back to him. The day before, he and his brother bear had been made king's consorts in front of most of the court. The warlock, who had done his best to avoid a mating, was now theirs.

Noah looked about the sumptuous bedroom, still not completely capable of absorbing what had transpired. That this was their new home. Adriel had lived there for many years without them, but for him and his brother bear, this was a whole new world. Eilam knew it better than he. His brother bear had run the king's security and had been in and out of the castle for some time. Noah hadn't been allowed entry-Adriel had known he couldn't continue to keep them at bay if there had been two against one. The minute the king had realized the bond he had with Eilam, the man had tried to ignore the fact that Noah existed.

Now, Noah refused to be ignored.

Noah pressed his lips to the king's forehead, and the man stirred against him.

After a moment, Adriel's eyes fluttered open. A confused look crossed his beautiful face. When his gaze lifted and met Noah's, the smile that soon formed there melted Noah's heart.

He drew in a breath, holding it as he felt the connection they shared deepen.

He's mine.

Finally.

"Good morning," the king whispered.

"Good morning," Noah murmured back. He lifted his hand and brushed back a lock of his mate's long, black hair. The silky strands slipped from his fingers. Noah lifted another lock, twirling it around one finger before meeting the king's stare once more.

Adriel's lavender eyes were alight with emotion. He lifted slightly and placed a genteel kiss to Noah's lips. After the night the three of them had just shared, Noah didn't feel anywhere close to genteel. He slid his hand through the king's tresses and tugged the warlock even closer. Forcing his lips firmly against Adriel's, he took control.

Their naked bodies came together, chest to chest. Against him, he could feel Adriel's heartbeat quicken. As did his own. Licking along the seam of the man's lips, Noah demanded entry. Adriel moaned and opened for him. He growled, his bear spirit demanding more. They'd already claimed him.

His bear would demand that they claim him over and over again.

Forever.

Adriel pulled away, breathless. His eyes and mouth open wide, he drew in a deep lungful before meeting Noah's stare. "You're going to drive me insane with kisses such as those."

"That," Noah murmured before placing a loving nip along the king's nape, "is the plan."

Adriel moaned lowly and writhed against Noah. He could feel the king's cock against his thigh. The warlock was hard as stone-just as he was. All the blood had raced to that one spot of his body, leaving him feeling woozy with need.

"Playing without me?"

Noah turned his gaze to see Eilam awake and watching them from the other side of the huge bed.

"Just waiting for you to finally wake up," Noah said with a smile. "Sleepyhead."

"I worked very, very hard last night," Eilam said as he slid his body closer and lined himself against Adriel's back. "I needed my rest so I could be ready for another round."

Memories of the night before danced in Noah's mind. After the announcement the king had made, they'd immediately retired to the king's rooms. After a light meal had been brought up-which they'd barely eaten-they'd made love all night, into the wee hours. Over and over, they'd memorized the curves and swells of the king's body. Noah was well on his way to being an expert in the topic.

Noah ran a finger along Adriel's neck, already knowing the back of it was an erogenous zone for the man. Once the tip of Noah's finger barely caressed that certain spot he'd learned last night, Adriel's eyes fell closed and his mouth parted on a gasp.

The look made Noah's cock jerk. He inhaled deeply, nearly moaning from the sight.

When Adriel's eyes reopened, there was a dreamy, lustful look to them. Noah nearly moaned again as his body responded. He was more than happy to fulfill that need for the rest of their days.

Noah lifted his stare to Eilam, silently telling his brother bear what he intended. The knowing look in Eilam's made his heart quicken. He had so much love for his brother bear, love they'd shared for so long without a third. Now, they had their triad and could finally one day become a family. He held Eilam's stare as he drew Adriel closer for another kiss. The corner of Eilam's lips hitched as he began to kiss a hot trail over Adriel's shoulder and up his neck. To that exact, perfect spot.

Adriel moaned even louder. Ever so slightly, his body began to tremble.

Noah spread his hand along the warlock's hip and let it roam down over one bare ass cheek. He squeezed, kneading the flesh in his hand, before moving down farther and sliding a finger along the split between.

Eilam ran his hand along the top of Noah's. Noah lifted his hand and laced his fingers in through his brother bear's-and then they ran their hands over Adriel together for a moment before drifting apart to tempt their king even higher.

Lips, tongues, and fingers explored, bringing them both closer to their limits. Sighs filled the room, their animalistic moans music to Noah's ears. Heat filled him, the bear within needing this bond made flesh.

He grasped the king's hard staff in his hand, ready to bring Adriel to release.

And the double doors into the bedroom whipped open. A servant entered and crossed the room to the curtains. He drew them open, and sunlight flooded the room. "Godsdamn it," Noah cried, shutting his eyes to the intensity. "What are you doing?"

"Out! Now!" Eilam cried to the servant.

The man looked stunned and confused, spinning as if to leave, but stopping himself and turning back. He stared at his king.

Noah then realized the man wouldn't leave unless Adriel ordered him to.

"Leave us… for a moment," Adriel said, no anger in his tone.

For a moment? That won't be enough time! Noah turned to glare at Adriel while the flustered servant slipped silently from the room. "Do he not know how to knock?"

NEW RELEASE: Dead by Midnight (Midnight, Mississippi, 3)

EILAM'S STORY IS HERE!

I know there have been a lot of you asking if Eilam would EVER get his story told. Well, it's finally here.

A pain in the ass mate wasn’t what Eilam expected on his first day on the job as the head of Midnight’s security. Life would’ve been much easier without, especially since his mate refused him and his brother bear, Noah.

Especially since his mate is the King of Midnight.

Adriel, Son of Theral, has felt the connection to Eilam from the moment the bear shifter walked into his throne room months before. He refused the man then and there, and refused to meet “the other one,” knowing full well he couldn’t handle two bear shifters in their prime and still walk away unclaimed.

But when Eilam is attacked and on the brink of death, Adriel comes face to face with his feelings, as well as finally confronting Noah—the man he’s denied for months. Add in the whole assassination plot and a vast conspiracy, and Adriel’s had better weeks.

Surrender could mean the end of their world. Adriel is torn between the two men he can’t ignore and the needs of the many. Will his duty to Midnight prevent his happily ever after?

Adriel felt his body tense. Being alone with Eilam was growing harder by the day. He picked up his quill and leaned over his desk. “Make it quick. I’ve had too many interruptions today as it is.”

He sensed the bear shifter move closer.

“We’ve had several reports of an increased vampire presence inside Midnight,” Eilam said as he sat across the desk from the king. “They’re not coming through the terminals, or we’d have them on the logs. They’re likely using an illegal portal somewhere in this city.”

Adriel listened to the bear shifter seated opposite him without lifting his stare. His lack of attention wasn’t out of rudeness or lack of time, but a knowledge that one look in the man’s direction would cause his cool, calm exterior to shatter. From the corner of his eye, he saw enough to make his pulse race, his breathing quicken, and his cock thicken.

“Come now, Eilam… you must know by now that there are illegal portals springing up all over this city. It’s one of the reasons I have to employ men like you to protect Midnight,” he said as he made a note on one of the parchments on his sprawling, ornate desk.

Even without looking, he could sense the ire coming at him in waves from Eilam.

“I am aware,” the man said, his tone slightly lower and darker. “I only meant that we might want to focus our efforts on closing more of them. A task force, solely focused on the illegal movement of people in and out of this city. I might need to hire more men… though I have a few in mind from the Midnight PD. I need your approval to make it happen.”

“Hire as you like,” Adriel said, waving a hand before making another note. “If there’s nothing else?”

Eilam grew silent. Adriel was finally forced to lift his stare. Across from him, Eilam was livid, his eyes glowing brightly. Even with that anger brewing on Eilam’s face, meeting the man’s stare was enough to set off the lust simmering within Adriel.

Hire as I like?”

Adriel leaned back, frowning. “I gave you what you want… so why am I suddenly the focus of your anger?”

“I’ve been trying to bring in new king’s guards for months now and you refuse them all. I’ve made recommendations for re-organizing the police department and making it more productive. I’ve made dozens of suggestions, only to have most of them refused.” Eilam rose to his feet and placed both fists on the desk, looming over Adriel. “I would love to be able to do my job effectively, but you make that impossible.”

Adriel looked up at Eilam, his body throbbing with want.

Succumb and he’ll win. I am ruler of this world. I won’t be controlled.

“I still don’t understand your anger… I just gave you what you asked for, yet I get attitude in return. I am particular about my guards and have every right to be. My king’s guard is at my side, day and night.” Adriel rose to his feet as well, refusing to cower. “And I think you may forget yourself and to whom you speak.”

Eilam snarled for a moment before lifting his chin arrogantly. “I would never place someone on your personal guard I did not trust completely. My only desire is to protect you.”

Since you won’t let it be me who protects you…

Eilam hadn’t spoken the words, but they might as well have been. They hung heavily in the air between them. Adriel wanted to escape… to put distance between him and this man who thought Adriel was his mate.

I am.

I belong to him.

NEW RELEASE: Quarter 'til Midnight (Midnight, Mississippi, Book 2)

Book Two in the Midnight, Mississippi series is OUT NOW!

Garret and Solomon have had a love-hate relationship for years. Solomon loves getting under the lion shifter’s skin and Garret hates how easily the dragon does it. One night at the local pub brings them nose to nose again, while celebrating the recent matehood of Reese, Theis, and Colm.

By the end of the night, the pair are heading out into the human world, on a mission for Reese, to check on his exiled friends.

Regardless of the mind-wiping the Midnight transit authority attempted, Hart remembers his time inside the paranormal world—however brief it was. He also knows someone’s missing. Unwilling to leave Reese behind, he must return to Midnight at any cost.

He just didn’t expect to arrive there kicking and screaming, tossed over someone’s shoulder like a sack of potatoes.

Hart was back in Midnight. Well, the station they’d arrived in by train before unceremoniously being dumped back out in the human world—without Reese. The place was as loud and chaotic as it had been the last times he’d been there. Lines queued up, filled with a bevy of paranormal entities—though he struggled to see things from his upside down view.

Blood rushed to his head, making his ears ring. Hart beat against the strong back of the man holding him. No matter what he did, he couldn’t break free from the iron band of an arm holding him.

His whole body shook, his mind a riot.

Something akin to need raged within him and he couldn’t understand it.

He forced himself to grow calm and listened to a conversation the man holding him was having.

“What do you mean, he remembers?” a deep voice asked.

Hart lifted his head and caught a dark-skinned man’s eye.

His golden eyes. They glowed when he stared at Hart. Just as the other man’s had glowed blue outside. This man was… just as handsome. But it was more than that… Hart felt drawn to the man, just like he’d felt an odd connection the one now holding him.

He sucked in a breath, mesmerized by the sight of those eyes.

“Let me down,” he commanded after a moment.

Hart was lowered to the floor. He spun to face the two men, watching them carefully. “Where’s Reese?”

“Safe,” the dark skinned man said.

“And you expect me to believe that?”

“I can bring him here to show you,” the man answered, the thick, rich sound of his voice giving Hart goose bumps.

“No,” the other man said, the man who’d abducted him.

“Why not? What are you hiding?” Hart demanded.

“That wasn’t part of the job,” the man hissed to the one with glowing, golden eyes.

“Neither was bringing him back into Midnight, I’d assume,” the dark man growled back.

Midnight Muse

I spent many hours preparing to write Bearly Midnight -- the first book in the Midnight, Mississippi series.

Midnight became a thing in my mind sometime around book 16 of the Bear Mountain series.  While I wasn't sure whose story it would be, I saw the scene at the train station from the very first moment the spinoff came to mind.

I didn't know anything else, but I knew there would be a train to Midnight.

And then I heard the song Midnight by Lianne La Havas... and I fell in love with it. My kidult had downloaded it to our shared iTunes account, so I was able to listen over and over and over again. It just felt like the song fit the story... I consider it my unofficial theme song.

If there's ever a movie (Ha!) I'd have to have this song...

So come now, hurry hurry, don't miss this train!

While in an audience with the king, he comes face to face with one member of his triad—a shifter named Theis. Theis isn’t prepared to accept that he has a mate. Not long after, Colm meets the last member of their triad—a human. Refusing to let the human go, he illegally smuggles the man into the city. Little gets past the Midnight Security Team, and they quickly come face to face with a king’s guardsman tracking him down.
