He knows what’s right, though, so he heads down to Baltimore to bring his man home.

Sky knows his injuries are a career-ender, and he can’t believe Beck has come for him after all this time. He’s not a hundred percent sure what went wrong with their marriage

Sky fucking refused to pussy out. He forced himself to walk whenever no one was watching. It was pure agony, dragging himself along behind his wheelchair, one step at a time.

The sooner he could walk, the sooner he could be functional, the sooner he’d get out. These doctors up here didn’t know cowboys. They kept telling him to be patient, to take it easy.

Fools.

Easy wasn’t the way.

“I know, I’m early. I’m here to take the rock star cowboy to—whoa. Hey, man.”

He rolled his eyes as Kevin put a foot against the front of the chair. He hadn’t planned on getting caught.

“What the hell are you doing?”

Fortunately, Kevin sounded more amused than pissed.

“Going to the little cowboy’s room.” That was a fair answer, right?

Kevin rolled his eyes. “You know there’s no brakes on this thing, right? You want to walk? All right. Let’s go, cowboy. Let go of that death trap and hold on to me.”

“That’s fair enough. Thanks.” By the time he made it to the restroom, he was soaked through and breathing hard. Goddamn, it sucked to be old.

“So, you want the chair for the way back?” Kevin grinned, daring him.

“Fuck you, asshole.” He shut the door in Kevin’s face, huffing out laughter. He did his business, washed his face, thought about shaving, decided against it, and headed out.

The chair was waiting when he opened the door, and Kevin wasn’t playing. “Sit your ass down.”

He knew when he was stuck, so he sat. “I’m working to get better, buddy.”

“Good.” Kevin rolled him about two feet to a chair and sat in it, face serious. “Listen up. I’m your best friend and your worst enemy. You want to start walking? Great. We’ll do it. We will do it. You have a metal rod and pins in your femur and a brand, spanking new hip. You take one fall that you’re not prepared for, and that hip is toast. If your hip is toast, not even God is gonna let you walk again. Am I making myself crystal clear here?”

“I want to start walking.” He leaned forward. “My guy and me, we’ve been broke up for four years. Four. Now he’s in my life, and I’m fucking worthless. I got to get better, man. I have to.”

He finally had a chance to be with Beck. He wanted it.

Sunday Spotlight: Catherine Lievens and Like Smoke

Welcome Catherine Lievens to Sunday Spotlight! She's here to share a bit from her new release Like Smoke (Vikings, Book 1)

***

Smoke can infiltrate even the best closed-off room, just like love.

Trygve is used to being on his own. His wife rejected him when he became a draugr around the year 800, and he hasn’t trusted anyone but his best friend, Thorvald, since then. He lives and works alone, and he has no intentions on changing that. Then he meets Isaac. Isaac’s life has been rotten—he was kicked out by his parents when he was sixteen, he was kidnapped from the streets at twenty, and he spent the last eight years chained to a wall and being abused. So when a tall blond man, appears out of thin air and kills the man who’s been torturing Isaac for so long, he begs for death—or to be taken away. Trygve knows he should dump Isaac in a hospital and go back to his solitary life, but Isaac needs help, and for some reason, he seems to trust Trygve, so Trygve lets him stay with him. Neither of them expects their unlikely friendship will become more, and they take things slowly, for both their sakes. But someone is after Isaac, and Trygve knows he will do anything to protect the first person he’s loved in more than a thousand years. Even if that means killing people he’s not being paid to kill.

Excerpt:

The door opened just as Tryg finished shifting. He reached for his gun and got it out just as a man walked out of what Tryg realized was the bathroom. Tryg didn’t notice much else about the place, though, because his attention was all on the man.

He shouldn’t have been there. Everything Tryg had found had indicated Galveston lived alone. The only other people in the house should have been the cook and the guards. So who was this man, and why was he naked and chained to the wall?

He was pretty—gorgeous, even. His dark hair was probably brown when it wasn’t damp, and it was already starting to curl again. His skin was too pale, but rather than making him look sickly, it made him appear ethereal. He was thin, though not excessively so, but Tryg could see scars on his skin, scars that shouldn’t have been there. There were cuts down the inside of his forearms, the most obvious ones being the ones that slashed his wrists right in the middle.

Then there was the chain. It ended hooked on the collar the man wore—a dog collar, or at least Tryg thought so. The man’s skin still looked damp and glistened in the light, and it was reddened around and under the collar. His eyes were wide and his face pale, and his gaze was fixed on the gun Tryg was holding.

Tryg put it away. It was obvious this man wasn’t a danger for him, but that didn’t mean everything was okay. Now that someone knew he was there, he had to leave and come back later. There was no way out of it. This man, whoever he was, might be about to raise the alarm, and Tryg couldn’t let that happen. He didn’t want to hurt this man, though. He hadn’t done anything to him, and while Tryg had no idea what he was doing there, he could take a guess, and he didn’t think he’d be too far off.

The man opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, Tryg heard voices coming closer. In his surprise at finding someone in the bedroom, Tryg hadn’t realized Galveston was home. He and the man looked at each other. Tryg didn’t know if the man was going to give him away, but at this point, he wasn’t going anywhere. He was there, and so was Galveston. He’d be sorry if he had to kill someone else, too, but if it was needed, then it would happen. He’d only leave this house with Galveston dead. He couldn’t be in sight when Galveston walked in, though, so he moved toward the door, planning to shift into smoke and hide behind it when Galveston came in.

A small hand grabbed Tryg’s wrist. He almost snatched it away, but he managed to curb that instinct and turned to look down at the man. There was fear in his dark eyes, and he clung to Tryg’s arm. “Please. Take me with you. Please.”

“I can’t—”

“Please. I’ll do whatever you want me to do. Anything. But you have to take me away.”

Tryg understood where the man was coming from, but it wasn’t something he could do. He was about to say that when the door handle turned. Tryg and the man stared at each other for a second, then Tryg had to shift into his smoke form.

The man’s eyes went even wider—Tryg hadn’t thought that was possible—and he took a step back just as the door opened.

Sunday Spotlight - Stephani Hecht and Baily's Ninth Life (The Lost Shifters, Book 33)

Welcome Stephani Hecht back to Sunday Spotlight! She's here sharing her soon to release book, Baily's Ninth Life (The Lost Shifters, Book 33)

* * * *

Baily learned to distrust other shifters through their treatment of him. As a housecat shifter, he’s not exactly the strongest shifter. To compensate, he’s become one of best soldiers for the Coalition. He’s made a place for himself with friends but he doesn’t truly believe they won’t turn on him.

Caden learned to distrust other shifters from birth. His grandfather taught him and his brother to avoid all Packs, Clowders, and Coalitions no matter what. All those lessons will be challenged when a stray cat claims a spot in his bar and maybe his heart. Together,

Baily and Caden, must re-learn the lessons of their lives. That not all shifters are against them. A trip with the leadership of the Coalition to a secret cabin might be the turning point. That maybe they can believe in other shifters, each other and love.

Excerpt:

Baily fumed as he let the lesser hottie treat his wounds. Meanwhile, he glowered at hottie number one as he thought about all the mean things he wanted to say to him once he got his damn collar off. And there was plenty Baily had to say.

First off, it didn’t matter that he was a Cat shifter. He could kick ass with the best of them, thank you very much. Sure he may not be able to shift and rip the throats of their enemies out, but he was one of the best sharpshooters in the Coalition. Something that had taken hours of practice to earn.

Secondly, he was not mangy. Okay, maybe he did look a bit on the rough side, but he’d been through some pretty tough shit. First, that stupid Frog captured him, then it hadn’t been easy going since he’d escaped. For some insane reason, it seemed as if every shifter in the city was hunting him down.

All of that had reduced Baily to hiding in the shadows, dumpsters and dark corners as he tried to make his way back to the Coalition. Then he’d happened upon the bar. When he’d caught a whiff of feline rolling off the bartender taking out the trash, Baily had dashed inside. He’d hoped the guy would be able to get in touch with Mitchell. Baily had heard rumors of two feline shifters who owned a bar in the city.

Instead, the bartender ended up not knowing Mitchell at all. Which made perfect fucking sense, since the only luck Baily had been having lately had been the shitty kind. That’s when he remembered that the rest of the rumors about how the bar owners were skittish around other shifters and didn’t interact with them at all. So, they probably hadn’t ever met Mitchell at all.

“Caden, are you sure you don’t want to take him in and get him fixed?” asked the younger brother.

As if! Baily had to pull in the urge to bite the dick’s finger off. He only refrained because Caden was pretty damn hot and he probably wouldn’t like it if Baily maimed his brother. But that didn’t stop Baily from hissing at the jerk.

“I don’t think he likes the idea,” Caden said. “Maybe, you should stop suggesting it, Jozef.”

If Baily could have, he would have given a sly grin. Then Jozef poked at his side and Baily let out a yelp. Damn it, that hurt. He’d gotten it when he’d crawled through a broken window to get away from those weird bird shifters. They’d been the worst when it came to hunting him down. It was almost as if they had some special recipe they were dying to make and the secret ingredient was Baily tail.

To make sure that Jozef got the message loud and clear that there would be no snipping of any body parts, Baily swiped his paw out and hit the male in his thigh. It wasn’t exactly the target Baily was aiming for, but it still got his point across. Jozef let out a yelp as he jumped back, his brown eyes wide in shock.

“What the fuck? Are you sure this thing isn’t a shifter?” Jozef demanded.

“I’m pretty sure, but you’re the one who should know for sure. You almost graduated from college to be a vet, not me,” Caden replied, his voice breathless because he was laughing so hard.

Jozef stooped down so he could look Baily directly in the eyes. Baily tried his best to make his expression as human as possible. If he could get these two lone shifters to believe he really was a shifter then maybe they would contact the Coalition for him. Then they could send for help and he could go home. Although, it would be a damn shame to have to leave Caden behind. Then again, there was nothing that said Baily couldn’t come back to visit the sexy bartender.

“Shift for me,” Jozef commanded.

Baily huffed in irritation. Didn’t they see the damn anti-shifting collar on his neck? Then a horrifying thought occurred to Baily. What if they didn’t know about the collars and the power they had over Baily? Oh, shit. That would not be good for him. Then they would think he was a regular cat for sure and no help would be coming Baily’s way.

It wasn’t as if Baily could just pick up a pen or pencil either. Cats didn’t have any thumbs. Which meant he couldn’t write a letter. He thought frantically for another way to communicate. He recalled reading a book by Dean Koontz where a genius dog communicated with Scrabble tiles, but Baily didn’t see one of those games lying around. So, unless he managed to find a computer and could log on, he was screwed.

“Nope, he’s not a shifter. Just a weird-o,” Jozef proclaimed as he straightened up.

Oh, just you wait until I get this damn collar off. Then we’ll see who the weird-o is, you son-of-a-bitch. I’ll kick your ass from here to Pontiac. Then you’ll be sorry for calling me mangy and threatening to cut my balls off.

Then Caden came over and began to stroke Baily’s head and all his dark thoughts floated away. Normally, he hated it when others petted him that way. It reminded him that he wasn’t a true predator, but a domestic pet. It made him feel weak and a joke. Yet, when Caden did it, Baily wanted to purr and rub himself all over the bartender. He even smelled nice. Like a warm whiskey with some spices mixed in. Which was odd that Baily found so appealing given that shifters didn’t drink that kind of stuff.

“You almost seem disappointed,” Jozef remarked.

“I’m not. Besides, it’s not like I could have done anything even if was a shifter. You know the rules, we don’t make nice with other shifters,” Caden replied, still stroking Baily’s fur.

That was an odd statement. It made Baily wonder what happened in their past that made them so leery of others of their own kind. At first, he’d just assumed they were Lost Shifters, part of the generation of felines who’d been lost over two decades ago during the Great Raven Attack. Now he wasn’t so sure. By the way, they were talking, he had a feeling there was a lot more to their story.

Welcome Lisa Oliver back to Sunday Spotlight. She's here to share a bit from her new release, My Treasure to Keep (Cloverleah Pack, #12)

Thomas, paid enforcer in the Cloverleah Pack, was carrying a lot of guilt. He still believed he was to blame for letting Wesley get targeted by the dark elves, almost causing a rift in Cathair and Marius's mating. The alpha Kane, told him it wasn't his fault, and Cathair and Marius came through the experience battered but not broken, but Thomas still felt as though he had to prove his worth to himself and the pack. He spends many hours patrolling long after the rest of the pack had gone to bed, determined to do something worthwhile. It was on one of those patrol nights he hears a ruckus outside the territory wards. Dithering as to whether he should help or not, he gets the surprise of his life when his true mate falls right through the magic designed to keep everyone not pack, out.

Ivan was carrying secrets; the main one tucked up in his battered backpack. After a six month long mission to find the Cloverleah pack, he was as surprised as the next man when he fell onto pack grounds and into the arms of his true mate. Unfortunately, other pack members, still emotionally scarred by Wesley's betrayal, didn't view his "break in" quite so favorably and Ivan ends up in the Cloverleah cells.

Meanwhile, the dark elves are getting closer and  more brazen in their efforts to ensnare the Cloverleah pack. Pack tensions are running high and something needs to be done and soon. Through it all, Thomas and Ivan have to navigate their mating and learn to trust in each other. Secrets will hit the light of day and life for the Cloverleah pack may never be the same. As for Thomas and Ivan - time is running out for them too. A chance arrow, a ray of sunshine; will it mean Ivan and Thomas will get their HEA or will they fall at the last hurdle along with the rest of the Cloverleah pack?

My Treasure to Keep is the twelfth full novel in the Cloverleah pack. It is advised to read the previous books to gain an understanding of the secondary characters and main plot lines. This is an M/M paranormal story featuring true mates. Warnings include graphic language, intimate situations, and some violence. Not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Excerpt
It’s got to be here somewhere. Ivan shot another hurried look over his shoulder. The glow from the pack lands he was seeking shone brighter than mother moon, but he’d been running for hours and there was just no way in. Grunts and then a cackle of laughter sounded behind him and Ivan knew he was running out of time.Stupid, stupid, stupid. I should never have stopped at that diner. His loud panting rang in his ears; other prey like rabbits and rodents, hiding like any sensible creature. But Ivan couldn’t stop. The Cloverleah pack was his only hope.
But if I can’t get in, all is lost! Clutching his bag closer to his chest, Ivan tripped and stumbled as he glanced back again. The humans were getting closer. For the millionth time since he’d started on his journey, Ivan wished he could shift. Not until you find your fated mate, sweetheart, you just have to be patient. Gods, he could hear his mother’s sweet voice, and tears pricked his eyes. I’m trying, Mother.
The thump of boots got louder, his hunters not caring that he could hear them coming. Stupid bastards thought it was a game, but for Ivan it was so much more. He knew he didn’t have much time. The crackle of the wards sent tingles over his skin. Ivan could see its glow, even though to human eyes there was nothing there. Please. A weakness, a break, a door, something. Come on guys, how do you get your freaking mail?
A crack of a tree branch right behind him made him stumble. Even though he knew he should keep running, he made the mistake of turning. Shit. They were right there, just ten feet away. Three hugely built males who looked as though they could tear him limb from limb with their bare hands. Black cargo pants, black sweaters, black boots and their faces covered with black balaclavas. Why do all villains wear black? Ivan wondered as he slowly backed up. He knew he couldn’t run much further. The muffin and coffee he’d managed to scrape up the change for was hours before and the only thing keeping him on his feet was adrenalin.
“I haven’t got anything worth stealing,” he said, wincing at the high pitch of his voice.
“You’re one of them.” The tallest one stepped closer. “One of them that live in the cult. Devil’s spawn.”
“Cult? I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Ivan could feel the wards against his back. Fates, please don’t let them give me a zap. “I got lost. I was supposed to meet some friends camping around here. I can’t find them. You haven’t seen them, have you?”
“The only ones out in these woods are you and us,” the guy on the right cackled. “Hand over your bag.”
“I told you, I don’t have anything worth stealing.” Ivan clutched his bag closer to his chest. “I don’t know who you think I am, but you’ve got the wrong guy. I’m just a city boy who doesn’t know how to use a compass.”
“Then you’re no use to us.” The guy on the left pulled out a large Bowie knife from its sheath attached to his belt. Black of course - the belt, not the knife, although the knife had a black handle. “Give us that bag or we’ll take it from you.”
Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. With three men advancing towards him and the wards at his back, Ivan had nowhere to run. There was no way he was giving up his bag while he was still breathing. “Leave me alone,” he yelled as loud as he could, praying someone on the other side of the wards would hear him. “I’ve got nothing you want. I’m just a nobody lost in the woods. HELP!”
The wards crackled across his back, so loud Ivan was surprised his attackers couldn’t hear it. As they lunged towards him, Ivan scrunched his eyes closed. Fates help me, he pleaded as the stench of the men filled his nostrils. His body tensed, waiting for the first blow. A big hand grabbed his arm and he was yanked…back? Electricity prickled across his skin and then suddenly, he was lying on grass, the wards in front of him this time. He opened his eyes to see a tall, well-built without being overly-muscled, naked man standing above him.

Sunday Spotlight: Frey Ortega and That Damned Alpha

Welcome Frey Ortega to Sunday Spotlight! He's sharing a bit of his recent release, That Damned Alpha (Blackrock Hollow, Book 1)

***

Sage Holbrooke was a free-spirited rebel living in a backwaters pack with an overbearing pack leader and a hatred for all things alpha.

But that's because he was born an omega: automatically on the lowest rung of the social ladder. Having to deal with going into heat, alphas going into rut, making sure he wasn't going to be claimed without his consent, Sage lived a life with so many rules that he just wanted to break free. So he did. Anytime he could. With -anyone- he could bend the rules with.

That is, at least, until he met Javi Castellano.

And then everything changed.

That Damned Alpha is a short novel complete at 36,978 words. It involves no cheating, a HEA, angsty omegas, and headstrong alphas.

Excerpt:

Sage Holbrooke never did say he was a shining example of how omegas should be.

He was a hunter—a go-getter—and when something was on his sights, he knew he had to go for it. Tonight, it was the man from across the bar.  The man had that glint of danger on him, along with a scent of virility so strong it was almost cloying, and a confident ease that belied every action he took.

This particular stranger was an alpha, and he was hot. Those two things were all Sage needed to know.

The sound of country music played around them, thrumming just under the din of people playing pool and resting after a hard day’s work. There were plenty of guys in the bar, some of whom were eyeing Sage up and down like the tasty morsel that he knew that he was. Others still, were looking at him in disgust, knowing exactly what he wanted and why he was there.

But Sage didn’t care about any of that. His eyes were trained right at this man at the other end of the bar, nursing his drink. The men around these parts usually looked the same, but not this guy. He had a certain…air about him. It was a quality that Sage couldn’t quite explain, but he was definitely attracted to. One look at the stranger, and Sage knew one thing they had in common, however.

They were both not from around here. That was good. There were less chances of any of Sage’s indiscretionsleaking out to his personal life. Small towns and small packs being what they were, some dude from this town could still find their way back to Sage’s hometown, yammer away about what he’s done, and life would become hell of a lot harder than it needed to be.

Truth was, Sage didn’t like “playing” where he lived. People in small towns had a way of yakking and gabbing about the people around them, and Sage already had a bit of a reputation where he lived. They called him a promiscuous omega. Being somewhere new, a couple of towns away, was better for Sage’s sex life. Sure, there wasn’t a gay bar in a hundred-mile radius of his home, but little truck stops like these were good enough for the kind of fun Sage had in mind.

Even if the whole “one-night stand with a stranger” scenario could be more dangerous for him than just becoming a social pariah.

Sage grimaced, and fought off the urge to shudder. He didn’t want to think about that right now. Just focus on finding a guy, and getting laid. That’ll stop you from thinking too much.

And that was really the only reason he would ever decide to leave Blackrock Hollow, anyway. Sometimes, the call of a really good cock could temper any rational thought. Sage wasn’t even in heat, but if he was, he was going to be doubly fucked. Nonetheless, he understood that when a guy needed a good fucking, he really needed a good fucking.

Maybe the desire to get utterly plowed was just one of Sage’s quirks, and not a universal thing. Still, it didn’t really change the fact that he couldn’t do this sort of secret rendezvous with anyone from his small town. People talked. He could only imagine what they’d say in the slightly-larger-than-usual chance that he got pregnant from one of these trysts, let alone if they just found out that the reason he went out of town so often was to have a night of anonymous sex.

He wanted as uncomplicated a life as possible. Finding some guy to have a one-night stand with a couple of towns over was easier, left no messes, and then he could go back to the quiet little hovel he called his home.

Blackrock Hollow, Sage’s hometown, wasn’t even a dot on the map, really. Theirs was a town in the middle of bumfuck-nowhere, smack-dab in the heart of what Sage considered rural America. Blackrock Hollow was about as nondescript a town as a town could be. He couldn’t really troll around for a one-night tryst there. There was barely, like, a hundred people in their town.

Sage inwardly shivered. It would basically be like incest.

The only reason they even functioned as a town was that they had their own post office. And though gay relationships existed in Blackrock Hollow, it was usually a result of an alpha claiming an omega to be their own. Omegas were treated worse than second-class citizens simply because they were different.

It was sickening, but Sage didn’t want to think about that.

But this guy—this man that made Sage’s inner wolf growl and yip and whine and scratch at his insides just to let the omega inside him loose—well, he feltdifferent. First of all, because he didn’t look like he was from around here, the way that people were eyeing him as warily as they eyed Sage. Second of all, because he just seemed to ooze sex appeal. There wasn’t an inch of this stranger’s body that Sage hadn’t ogled by now—well, what parts of him that Sage could see over the bar, anyway. Then there was the scent of him, which told Sage immediately that the man was a wolf shifter, just like he was. The smell in the air called to him like a moth to a flame.

And true, there were plenty of alpha wolves around, but not many who were actually built to lead. This guy didn’t just demand attention, he commandedit, and it was downright intoxicating.

Sage was piqued, maybe even aroused, from the very moment he set his eyes on the other man. It was beginning to win over the anxiety he was feeling. He went from tapping his fingers softly on the bottle, over and over, to actually sipping the alcohol and calming his frayed nerves.

This alpha was all muscle and strength contained in an almost-ratty white shirt. He had tanned, swarthy skin that was ochre in hue. Judging from some mild crisscrossing of slightly lighter-pigmented skin across his hands, some on his chest, and even on his neck, the stranger had his fair share of scars—he’d probably seen a scuffle or two that had turned serious in his time. He had an angular jawline and dark eyes that were downright piercing. His close-cropped black hair trailed down into a thick five o’clock shadow that wrapped around the bottom half of his face.

All that, andhe swigged back a shot of tequila without even so much as a grimace. There was that slightly playful, amused expression on his face, and the sum total of all of those parts put together basically ensured that Sage’s hard-on was stiffer than a board. An erection that was definitively caused by this bronze-skinned Adonis of an alpha.

An alpha whose eyes slowly met his, and they were actually a deep, rich brown in color. Striking. Piercing.

The man grinned. If it seemed possible, the intensity in his eyes seemed even stronger.

Was he interested? He definitely seemed interested.

Story Excerpt:

“You seem very sure I’m bisexual.” Guy put his hands in his pockets.

Theo paused on the trail. He could see the trailhead just up ahead. “Aren’t you?”

Guy looked at him. “I was married for a long time.”

“That’s not an answer.” Theo took a risk and stepped closer. “I know a great way for you to find out for sure.” He ignored the little voice in his head that was telling him not to be an impulsive idiot. He looked back down the trail and waved a “wait” signal to the two bodyguards trailing them. Julio had already reached the trailhead, and Theo knew he was checking out the car. They were as alone as they were going to get right now. And it’s just a kiss. It’s not like we’re going to have sex in the middle of a hiking trail.

“How?” Guy asked, sounding wary.

“I kiss you right here, right now. If you like it, you’re bi. If you don’t, you’re not.” Theo waited, knowing even as the words left his mouth that nothing in life was as simple as what he’d just suggested. He knew that even if Guy enjoyed the kiss, there would be some serious questions for his soulmate to wade through before he came out the other side. Guy had just spent most of his life thinking he was straight, and denying the feelings that were buried deep all along. And I know firsthand that it isn’t easy to change beliefs you hold onto too tightly, Theo mused, thinking of his parents. He shook off the bad memories. Now was not the time to dredge up that emotional shitstorm.

“That’s crazy,” Guy said, half smiling, and half looking like a man about to run for the hills. “You could be a shitty kisser.”

Theo smirked. Guy hadn’t said no. “I’m an Empath. I’m incapable of being a shitty kisser.”

Guy laughed, as Theo had intended. “So the rumors about Empaths are true? They’re great in bed?”

Theo didn’t reply. He let his silence speak for him.

Guy ran a hand over the back of his neck. “This is crazy,” he muttered, repeating himself.

Theo’s cock swelled as he sensed Guy’s tentative arousal. And fear. Don’t forget the fear, he thought, as his power instinctively reached out to his soulmate. Guy was the one person in the world he would never be able to block out. He sensed Guy’s attraction to him, and his anxiety, as well as his bone-deep weariness with being sad. The relaxation he’d felt just a little while ago on the trail lingered, too.

“Yeah, okay. What the hell,” Guy said, stepping closer. “What’s the worst that could happen?”

Theo grinned. “You sound like a man trying to decide if he should try out a new taco, not a kiss.”

“It’s just as terrifying,” Guy replied instantly. “You never know when a taco could be harboring one of those insanely hot peppers. I could get burned.”

Theo reached out and put a hand on Guy’s shoulder, willing him to relax. “I’m not a habanero, Guy,” Theo murmured.

“You might as well be,” Guy said, his voice catching.

Theo moved his hand from Guy’s shoulder to his cheek. “Shh.”

Guy’s eyes widened.

Theo put his thumb on Guy’s lips and sensed a sudden spike in the older man’s arousal. Here goes nothing, he thought, just before he leaned in and kissed his soulmate for the first time.

****

Guy froze as Theo’s lips touched his. Theo’s mouth was soft and expressive, and so damned hot he thought he might go up in flames if he moved even an inch. He stood there, trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with him, when suddenly his Craft power lit up through his body. Energy rushed through him, and he reached out to grab Theo’s arms. He meant to push him away, but he found himself clutching at the younger man as if he were a life raft and Guy was drowning.

“Easy,” Theo murmured against his mouth.

“Fuck.” Guy kissed him back, searching for … what? He had no idea. All he knew was that he’d never felt so damned aroused in his life. His cock shoved against his pants, hard and hot and insistent. He groaned when Theo slid his hands into his hair and kissed him again, licking into his mouth with intent. They were the same height, so Guy didn’t have to crane his neck down the way he’d had to in order to kiss Pamela. It was strange. Hot. More than that, though, he felt unbalanced. Confused.

Theo gentled the kiss and pulled back. “There.”

There? Who was the man kidding? Guy stared at him. Was Theo as stunned as he was? The younger man’s mouth looked red and slightly swollen. I did that to him, Guy thought, and then, But I’m straight.

“Dammit,” Theo muttered, and then he stepped closer and kissed Guy again.

This time, Theo pressed himself up against Guy’s torso, and for the first time in his life, Guy felt another man’s hard-on against his hip. “Jesus,” he gasped, unable to stop his body’s instinctive thrust forward. He grabbed Theo’s arms again, absently reveling in the man’s strength, and pulled him closer. “What the fuck is happening?”

Theo answered by biting Guy’s lower lip.

Guy moaned into Theo’s mouth, and walked them back until the younger man’s body hit the sturdy oak tree at the edge of the trail. Guy’s Craft flared again, and the tree shuddered as his energy hit it, but then Theo slid his tongue into his mouth and he didn’t care about anything except the younger man coaxing him to open himself wide. He did, and Theo bit him again. Guy’s erection swelled, and he gasped. He slid his hands down Theo’s arms to his hips.

“Oh, God,” Theo said, head thunking back against the tree as Guy pushed into him.
