Now Available! Sleeping Beauty: An Erotic Gay Fairytale by Kelex

Caught in the battle of a lifetime, Prince Rainier’s land is nearing surrender. Years of war have destroyed his once beautiful land and virtually everything he held dear. His forces are dwindling, his gold almost gone, and he’s facing the prospect of an arranged marriage in order to buy allies in a last ditch attempt to save his kingdom.

On a fool’s errand, he races out in search of one last hope—an old fairy tale his father had once told him of a sleeping army that could win his war for him.

The only wrinkle? He’ll have to kiss a beautiful princess in order to do it. Unwilling to let his people suffer, he’ll do what he must in order to save them all. And perhaps that princess won’t want him once she awakens… considering he doesn’t want her.

Only his princess isn’t all he’d expected.

Can he find a way to save his people and not curse two people to live in a loveless marriage?

And what’s all this nonsense about true love?

This story originally appeared on Manlike Fantasies as a short story. It has been expanded—tripled in length—and professionally edited.

“Shhh,” Rainier said as he ran a hand down his horse’s neck. After it was apparent the animal wouldn’t calm easily, he slid from his spooked horse and continued soothing the stallion. “It’s okay, boy. According to the map, we’re almost to the village.”

There was good reason for the horse to be spooked. He cast a look to the side. Off in the distance, stood a huge ruined castle or fortress of some kind. It was hard to see, between the moon’s glow and the dense overgrowth surrounding it. A shiver raced down his spine. Something evil resided inside that place, he sensed it in his gut.

Steeling himself, he refused to let his instincts show. He’d never get Bailey to calm if he let his concern show. He ran a hand along the horse’s strong neck. “Not far, boy.” He led the horse a bit farther away from the brambles that grew closer to the structure. Noises sounded behind him… noises that didn’t sound natural…

He kept walking, leading Bailey through the dark stretch of road.

Once they rounded a corner, the moon came out from behind a cloud. Brighter, the horse seemed to calm. Rainier climbed astride and urged his steed forward. It wasn’t long before they came across an inn at the crossroads.

“I think we’ll call it a night,” he murmured to his horse, which whinnied his approval.

After leading his horse to the stables and paying the stable master a florin to get the animal cared for, he bid his horse ado for the night and ambled into the inn. A rowdy bunch was well into their cups as he edged through the crowd. Over a drunken chorus, he paid for a room, ale, and dinner before moving to a seat close to the fire.

Rainier scanned the room, searching for any signs of danger. Traveling alone was never wise, but he had no choice. He was in dire need.

The innkeeper brought over his ale and trencher filled with mutton stew. “I’ve got a room being tidied up fer ya now,” the robust man said. “Should be ready by the time ye’ve eaten.”

“Many thanks,” Rainier said before nodding to the man and taking a long drink from the pint.

The food didn’t last long. He hadn’t eaten all day. It was too salty and a bit too overcooked, but he was starving, so he ignored all that. After a refill of his pint to wash down the salt, he again scanned the room.

It had grown a bit quieter as he’d eaten. He searched over the faces of the men inside, only to have a plump woman land in his lap.

“Need someone ta warm that bed o’yers?” she asked with a coy smile.

“I doubt you’d like my bed,” he muttered before pushing her to her feet.

“A handsome chap like you? I think I’d like that verra much.”

Rainier lifted an eyebrow. He had more important things to do than argue with her. A fuck wasn’t the reason he’d come this far, alone. But then, maybe she could answer his questions.

“How much?” he asked.

Her smile widened. “One of them florins ye’ve got should do.”

“How about I pay you one of those—if you have some news to share with me?”

A frown crossed her face. “News?”

“That fortress I passed on the way here—the one covered in vines—can you tell me about it?”

Her eyes grew wide. “Yer not thinking of going in there, are ya?”

He shrugged. He was desperate. And he’d heard the myths… if they were true, he needed something inside. “Perhaps.”

“Issa dark, dark place, that. Ya don’t wanna go there.”

He held up a coin. “I just want you to tell me all you know…” He dropped his hand. “Unless you don’t know anything.”

The woman flopped down across from him. “O’course I do.” She eyed him before lifting her chin arrogantly. “Dinner, ale, and that coin, and I’ll tell ya whatever ya want.”

Rainier sighed. “Dinner and the ale.” He leaned forward. “And if your information is strong, then I’ll pay you the coin.”

She considered him a moment before nodding. He lifted a hand and called over the innkeeper. Once he’d paid for the woman’s food, the old man muttered as he walked away.

“The story goes that there’s a princess inside that place,” she said. “Some call her Sleeping Beauty. Say she’d the fairest lass the land’s ever seen. But I say there’s no way anyone’s alive in there, asleep or not. It’s been a good three hundred years now. All’s in that place is cobwebs and bones. ‘Cept for—”

She paused as the innkeeper delivered her food. Immediately, she took the ale and drained what had to be half.

“Except for?”

The woman lowered her tankard. “‘Cept for the dragon. He’s been in there, guarding the Sleeping Beauty for all these years. I’ve heard him myself, I have. Roaring in the middle of the night.”

Rainier averted and rolled his eyes. A dragon. Sure. There hasn’t been a dragon sighting in a thousand years or more.

“They say the whole castle fell asleep when she did… the king, the queen… his court… his army… and his guards and knights.” The myths that surrounded the king’s elite guard and those knights were stuff of legend. They’d been powerful… unstoppable… and all brought down by a girl who couldn’t remain away from a spindle.

“That’s what I hear. A kiss from her true love will awaken the entire castle. Whoever does it will get rewarded in gold, lots of it.”

A smile crossed his face. His country was in ruins… his armies nearly destroyed. An evil tried to claim his lands.

Reawakening that sleeping army, the guards, and the knights was his last chance. The gold reward could help buy his troops the supplies they desperately needed. His neighbors had already been defeated… his country was the last bastion of hope.

He wouldn’t let his people down.

If he had to kiss some girl, so be it.

“Wait a minute? True love? The one to kiss her must be her true love?”

“So I hear.”

Rainier frowned. “The tale I heard said anyone who could get past the brambles, the mighty dragon, and awoke the princess with a kiss would receive a grand reward.”

“No telling,” the woman said. “The story’s older than I am. Either of us could be right.”

Rainier smiled ruefully, irritated at a new wrinkle in the tale.

“No reason to smile,” the woman said between bites of the stew. “Yer never gettin’ in.”

“You think so little of me, hmm?”

“Ya think yer the first who’s tried? There are bones of great knights in those brambles, even more inside with that dragon. Many a man has died trying to get the princess. None did. And they all died trying.”

He didn’t want the princess. He wanted something far greater.

Reaching into his pocket, he caressed the map he held there. He’d stumbled across it in his library months before, a token his father had received from someone. It showed a secret passage into the castle. If he could bypass the bramble and sneak in to see whatever guarded that castle, perhaps he’d have a better chance.

He withdrew the map and showed the woman a portion of it. Pointing near the spot where the tunnel began, he looked across the table.

“Know where this is?”

She cocked her head, the fork stuck between her full lips. Staring as she chewed, she finally slid the implement out before gazing at him wide-eyed. “That’s near the mill.” She pointed to a small spot. “That’s it, I’m sure.”

“You can direct me there?”

“Follow the road to Iveyville. Sign is right out there. Ya will see the mill’s blades after a few miles or so.”

Rainier smiled and handed her the coin. “Thank you.”

The woman smiled. “I can still keep ya comp’ny tonight if ya want. No additional charge.”

Rainier shook his head. “Not tonight. I have a big day tomorrow.”

Sunday Spotlight - Hayden West and Claiming the Throne

Welcome Hayden West back to Sunday Spotlight -- they're sharing a bit from the new release, Claiming the Throne (The Prince's Mate, 3)

****

Zach Adan wasn't sure he would have survived this long, being thrust into this world he'd never believed had even existed, he was now a key player in this world.

Prince Chamber Sept Mallo, Chase to everyone else, has finally returned home to claim his throne. He's also brought his mate with him. It wasn't going to be as simple as that, however, as there are still those who want him dead, as well as his mate. Will he be able to keep not only his own throne but also his mate?

Chapter One

Chase yawned as he rolled over, a slight smile turning up his lips at the hard body of his mate and lover lying there beside him. Right now everything was quiet. He had no problem hearing the soft snores from Danny, Zach’s brother from the next tent over where the others slept.

He’d refused to budge on Zach and he sleeping away from one another. Chase needed the comfort, the touch. And so did his wolf.

It wasn’t about the sex right now, it was about the tactile satisfaction.

They had thrown up camp after returning to his lands. He’d not wanted to go home yet, even though his presence would have been sensed.

The breathing of his lover changed and he knew then, Zach had awakened.

“Morning.”

While he didn’t pull away, the man stiffened and that was a dagger to the heart in itself. I suppose I should be happy he didn’t pull away. But the sad truth was, he wasn’t. This, whatever the hell it was between them, the rift, it was sort of felt as if it were growing and set him more and more on edge.

Since the conversion, Zach had changed. In more ways than he’d initially believed. And he wasn’t coming back to his old self. Yes, being forced to become a shifter, couldn’t be easy. He got that.

Chase had been born one. And of the royal line at that so he had it easy, his body and wolf were one complete unit. Two parts of the same whole.

He understood—on some level—it wasn’t the easiest for Zach and it killed him to be unable to make it smoother for him.

Reaching for his mate, his wolf calmed the moment they had skin to skin contact. So did he. Zach remained facing away from him. Chase didn’t care, right now he wanted to touch.

“I thought we had to go.”

Chase curved and arm around the man beside him, drawing near.

“We have time.”

For a moment, Zach relaxed. In the blink of an eye he had pulled away and was across the tent. Chase sat, mind cataloging everything. The fear, anger, and uncertainty in his eyes along with the wildness that reined unchecked.

In slow, increments awareness crept back in. “I should check on Danny.”

Chase nodded, well aware telling Zach that Danny was safe with the others wouldn’t go over well. His foster brother was a sensitive spot as well as an extremely volatile one.

“Let’s go then.” Chase reached for his jacket and shoes. They finished at the same time and Chase trailed him out of the tent, closing the flap behind him.

The cold mountain air cut through his exposed skin, making him glad they had the tents. Sure, he could have stayed in the nearest town but he preferred the outdoors, like most shifters.

He cracked his neck and rolled his shoulders as his lieutenants and best friends exited their tent. No Danny.

Trey met his questioning gaze with a smile. “He’s still sleeping.”

Zach pushed into the tent and Chase didn’t look away until his mate had vanished.

“How’s Danny holding up?”

He almost missed the shuttered expression on Trey’s face that lingered ever so briefly.

“Exhausted. Slept like a man who’d been awake for days without any shuteye. He’s worried about his brother on top of that and that’s not helping.”

And you’re concerned for him.“For good reason.” He cast a glance back to the tent. “He and his wolf are at war. They’ve not come to peace yet.”

“Are you sure they will?” Victor asked.

“No, but I have to hope that it come to pass. The crone said he would be a monster. I don’t want to have to kill my mate.”

“Could you?” Trey posed the question, crouching to build up the fire.

“Pack comes first. It’s my fault the wolf is in him. I will deal with the consequences.” He acknowledged he hadn’t answered the question because in all honesty, he didn’t think he would be able to kill his own mate. That’s not how it worked, die for him? In a heartbeat. But to take his life from him? That was doubtful.

I would be a shell of a man if it came to that but I have to do what is best for the Pack. That’s how it’s always been and how it will always be.

Victor grunted and went to pull a pot form the back of the vehicle. Soon water heated for coffee and they had food cooking soon after.

Chase was drinking his second cup of coffee when Zach and Danny emerged from the tent. His mate appeared calm and for a moment it irritated him that another male could—and did—provide that for him. Reining in both his anger and the wolf, he met both of their gazes.

“There’s coffee and food. We’re leaving in twenty minutes.”

He turned to face Trey. His righthand man never wasted time just crouched beside him, a stick in one massive hand.

“Are we heading straight in?”

He drained his coffee, swallowed, then placed the mug in the snow. “Yep. My uncle has to know I’m already on my way. Given so does everyone else, he won’t do anything aside from welcoming me home with open arms. He will want everyone think he was in support of my claiming the throne before he tries to have me step down for being unmated.”

“And when he finds out?”

“He’ll try to kill me.” Try being the operative word.

“Who’s trying to kill you?” Danny stood near them both.

Cutting his eyes to the right, he ran an impartial skim over the man who was his brother-in-law. Or would be once they were officially wed. to him, Danny was family already as he and Zach were mated.

“My uncle.” He shared a look with Trey and pushed to his feet. “He wants the throne.”

Danny shook his head. “I thought our family was odd.”

“Royal politics suck.” Beyond Danny, Zach worked with Victor on loading up the SUV with all of their tents and other gear. “When we get there, stay close to Trey, Victor, or Harry. Don’t go wandering around alone.”

“I’m not in line for the throne.”

“You’re human. Most of my kind have little to no use for your kind.”

“Swell. So he’ll be fine?”

Chase didn’t have to ask which “he” Danny asked about.

“No, he won’t go anywhere alone either.”

“He’s not going to like that.”

“Zach can be pissed all he wants. My goal is to keep him alive.”

Danny walked closer so there was very little space between them. His wolf snarled low but other than being alert, did nothing.

“Is that because he means so much to you personally or because of what he means to your throne?”

His wolf didn’t take to much offense to that, he was actually impressed by Danny’s fortitude. Chase blinked slowly, careful to keep his wolf at bay and calm, not wanting Zach to fly into protective mode. He wasn’t sure how much, or rather, how little would set him off.

“The crown and throne are a result of my status. It is what it is. I wasn’t looking for a mate when I met Zach. However, he is my mate and the most important thing in my life, make no mistake.”

“All I care about is his happiness. When this is over, I will be back to my life of surfing and jet setting. I need to know he’s in the best possible hands.”

Trey tensed briefly, his attention on the woods to the left. Chase didn’t shift his attention from Danny, aware of everything around them.

“He is in the best possible hands. Mine.”

Is everything okay, Trey?

His lieutenant didn’t provide a verbal response, merely a sharp nod of his head.

“Let’s move,” he called out, needing to have Zach out of danger.

Probably shouldn’t bring him to the royal house then.Ignoring his inner commentary, he shoved his hands in his front pockets.

The urgency in his tone couldn’t be missed. At the royal house his father may want to kill him bur the most part they should be safe there. Unless things had completely changed since he had left.

If I ignore the fact I’m bringing in a human and my mate who is considered an abomination from the forced conversion. Yeah, we’ll be fine.

At the vehicle, he and Victor took the front. Trey had the back with Harry while Zach and Dann were in the middle.

Victor drove. Chase wasn’t going to argue, he was the best driver. He’d grown up on the track and could drive anything with a wheel. Hell, not only with a wheel, anything that moved.

In their dreams? Agarri wondered if the male was insane for a moment, but the clarity in his eyes told Agarri he was quite lucid. “I know nothing of dreams. I’ve never met you or your companions, nor asked you anything.”

“I could no longer ignore your demands, and I had find you … we had to find you. You may not have been the one asking, but the dreams mean something, Your Highness. We’re meant to protect you; I know it in my very bones.”

The prophecy? Agarri felt himself swaying on his feet slightly, but caught himself. If it was the fulfillment of his destiny, a battle beckoned. The other two rose and their large bodies filled the space and made Agarri feel surrounded. From afar, they were menacing. Up close, they were downright terrifying. “What is your name, Sir?”

“Sir Drayden Am’peria of Kannom. On the left is Sir Irylan d’Ammana, and on my right is Sir Bayjin b’Merida, both of Kannom as well.”

“Kannom? That’s on the other side of the planet, is it not?”

“It … was. Before the Xakarrian destroyed most of it.”

“If memory serves, it was told to be a wild place, a beautiful realm. A place our warriors of old retired to.”

“Retired? More like exiled to once the old kings no longer felt warriors were of need.” Sir Drayden lips spread into a half-smile. “And it was not as beautiful as His Majesty, but beautiful, yes.”

Agarri looked up into the male’s eyes. Sir Drayden was menacing in his power. The half-smile had looked odd on his commanding face, like it didn’t belong there. Agarri got the feeling he rarely smiled, and Agarri had been witness to something unusual in that moment. His gaze drifted to the other two males who wore serious looks as they all stood towering over him. They were more than intimidating. They were frightening, although Agarri sensed he would find no harm in their arms, only pleasure.

Sir Drayden thought him beautiful. A shiver of delight passed through him, but he fought it off. He needed more information before he determined what they would do. “You said it took you weeks to get here. Why?”

“A small band of my warriors and I escaped the planet after the Xakarrian claimed it. We left to lick our wounds and find a way to reclaim our world. Getting here without being caught is not easy. It took us time, skill, and a lot of luck to find a way back for you.”

“And you came to get me. How do I know you’re not lying? You could be an agent for the Xakarrian for all I know, sent to kill me. They’ve been searching for me since the war. I’m sure the price on my head has grown quite large.”

“Honestly, it’s astronomical. But the fact you haven’t been turned in only proves the loyalty of those who’ve hidden you.” Sir Drayden looked over his shoulder at Kazru.

Kazru grimaced. “I didn’t save him all these years to hand him over to beasts like you.”

“Beasts?” Sir Drayden asked with a smile. “I think we’ve behaved ourselves while in your establishment.”

“Do you call running all my patrons out behaving?”

Sir Drayden walked to within inches of Kazru. “If we weren’t behaving, they’d all be dead.” He then turned to look at Agarri. “And you would be as well, Your Highness. If I wanted you dead, or wanted to turn you in to the Xakarrians, we wouldn’t still be standing here talking right now.”

Agarri shivered at the words, realizing the truth behind them. “Do you wish to frighten me, Sir Drayden?”

“No, I wish you to understand our motives. We only wish to protect you.”

Agarri felt Sir Drayden lower his walls, the walls he’d erected around his mind. Powerfully thick, Agarri hadn’t been able to find a crack when he’d probed before. Now the male made himself completely open to Agarri. Agarri stood taller, his body tensing as he allowed his mind to enter Sir Drayden’s. To peek in to another’s head without them knowing was one thing; to be welcomed in and asked to merge was almost … intimate. He was hesitant at first, letting a tentacle out to test the mental waters. Entering another’s mind was like swimming, floating in the images stored within.

Agarri closed his eyes and entered Sir Drayden’s mind, jumping into the pool of thoughts and memories. Largely uncomplicated, the male sought a way to take the planet back for the Shapeshifters, along with his band of warriors, just as he claimed. A dark danger seemed to be approaching, something Agarri had been sensing for weeks, as well. Sir Drayden felt it, too, which seemed to give credence to Agarri’s worry. Something was coming for him, and he was almost sure the males were here to save him from the threat.

Agarri also saw the dreams Sir Drayden had experienced—erotic, highly charged dreams, where Agarri had performed acts he wasn’t even aware of being possible, some with all three of the males at once. He blushed at the visions he saw. His body reacted to them quite differently.

You will reenact each one of those scenes, Your Highness. We’ve been tempted too long to not demand our due.

Agarri pulled out of Sir Drayden’s head and opened his eyes after the male put the thought inside his mind. The shifter stood in the middle of the room, his arms crossed over his massive chest, with a smug smile on his face as he eyed Agarri. Agarri had never felt someone put a thought, an idea, into his mind before. The male was strong, stronger than any he’d sensed before.

“Sir Drayden, you and the others may have dreamed of me, but I did not put those thoughts in your head. I am not responsible for your lusts. I owe you nothing.”

Sir Drayden had Agarri in his arms in a flash, his hard body jutting into Agarri’s. A flash of light seared Agarri’s brain, the simple act of touching seemingly the cause. Sir Drayden dropped to his knees, taking Agarri with him. A vision sliced into Agarri’s head, and he closed his eyes to see it better. It was an image of him sitting on the throne … alongside Sir Drayden … the new king. Sir Irylan and Sir Bayjin stood behind them on the dais. The light faded after a moment, and Agarri finally reopened his eyes and gazed at Sir Drayden. “What was that?”

“I’m here to save you, Your Highness. It’s all clear now. You’re ours. And I think you know it.”

Agarri released a low moan, the feeling of the male against him too good. His cock grew harder, his body ready for anything Sir Drayden and his companions had in mind.

“Your Highness, you must keep your virginity for the prophecy,” Kazru said.

“Prophecy?” Sir Drayden asked, his frown heavy. “What prophecy?”

“It’s you,” Agarri whispered. “You three are the ones I’ve been waiting for.”

I loved the tale so much, I decided to expand the tale considerably and release it as an ebook.
